ประเทศไทยอยู่ในอันดับ ICT ที่ 77 จากทั้งหมด 142 ประเทศ สิงคโปร์และมาเลเซียอยู่ในอันดับที่ 2 และอันดับที่ 29 ตามลำดับ
World Economic Forum ได้จัดอันดับประเทศที่มีความพร้อมด้าน ICT มากที่สุดประจำปี 2012 (The World Economic Forum’s 2012 Networked Readiness Index: NRI) โดยจัดอันดับจาก (1) Environment หรือสภาพแวดล้อมของประเทศทั้งทางด้านสังคม การเมือง กฎเกณฑ์ต่างๆ ที่เกี่ยวกับ ICT (2) Readiness หรือความพร้อมของโครงสร้างพื้นฐานและโครงข่ายโทรคมนาคมรวมถึงความสามารถในการเข้าถึง ICT ของประชากรในประเทศ (3) Usage หรือการใช้งานของประชากรในประเทศทุกภาคส่วน และ (4) Impact หรืออิทธิพลของ ICT ต่อเศรษฐกิจและสังคมของประเทศ

ปัจจุบันการพัฒนาด้าน ICT ของไทยเป็นไปในทิศทางที่ดีเพราะมีการสนับสนุนจากภาครัฐทั้งกระทรวงเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศและการสื่อสาร (กระทรวง ICT) และคณะกรรมการกิจการกระจายเสียง กิจการโทรทัศน์ และกิจการโทรคมนาคมแห่งชาติ (กสทช.) เช่น นโยบายบรอดแบนด์แห่งชาติของกระทรวง ICT ที่รัฐจะดำเนินการให้ประชาชนทั่วประเทศมีโอกาสเข้าถึงอินเตอร์เน็ตความเร็วสูง และหน่วยงานกำกับดูแลกิจการโทรคมนาคมของประเทศอย่าง กสทช. ก็ดำเนินการหลายอย่างเพื่อพัฒนากิจการโทรคมนาคมของประเทศไม่ว่าจะเป็นการจัดประมูล 3G ที่ผ่านไปและโครงการที่จะจัดประมูล 4G ต่อไป นอกจากนี้ประเทศไทยยังมีโครงการที่จะก้าวเข้าสู่การเป็นศูนย์กลาง CSA ของอาเซียน (CSA ASEAN Hub) หรือการเป็นศูนย์กลางด้านระบบ Cloud Computing ของอาเซียน โดยกระทรวง ICT ได้ลงนามความร่วมมือจัดตั้ง CSA ASEAN Hub ขึ้นอย่างเป็นทางการในประเทศไทยในงานประชุมสัมมนาเชิงวิชาการ ASEAN CSA Summit 2013 ที่จัดขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 7 – 8 กุมภาพันธ์ที่ผ่านมาเพื่อยกระดับ ICT ไทยให้มีบทบาทมากขึ้น ประกอบกับในปี ค.ศ. 2015 ประเทศไทยและอีก 9 ประเทศในอาเซียนกำลังจะก้าวสู่การเป็นประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน (ASEAN Economic Community: AEC) ที่จะมีการเปิดเสรีในหลายๆ ด้านรวมไปถึงด้านโทรคมนาคมด้วย ทำให้ประเทศไทยต้องเร่งพัฒนาด้าน ICT ให้เร็วที่สุดเพื่อเพิ่มขีดความสามารถในการแข่งขันของประเทศและของประชาชน
